One of the world’s tiniest frogs has been discovered in Borneo. At 10-12 mm long, Microhyla nepenthicola may be micro, but its croak is loud. That’s how researchers found them, swimming in tiny puddles of water captured by pitcher plants.A group of zoologists with Conservation International say they found the frogs by the side of the road in Borneo, near a national park. The biggest wasps' nest in Britain has been discovered in a country pub loft containing half a million wasps. The nest measured 6ft by 5ft and was found in Southampton, Hants. The infestation was discovered in a chimney stack before being destroyed by Sean Whelan, a pest controller. Mr Whelan said: “It was scary as hell but it is what I am trained for – I just pulled out my iPod and listened to ‘Bat Out of Hell’ to get me through the job. “I killed all the wasps but the nest is s...
  • Antarctic Octopuses Found With Cold-Resistant Venom

Researchers have discovered four new species of octopus in Antarctica with venom that works at sub-zero temperatures. They hope to analyze the venom to see if it has medical uses, said one of the researchers, Bryan Fry, of the University of Melbourne. Their discovery, during a six-week expedition to Antarctica in 2007, was published in the journal Toxicon.Experts have long known there were octopuses in Antarctica, but what surprised Fry and his colleagues was the sheer biodiversity and how na...
  • Ancient Species Discovered In Barrier Reef Depths

Australian scientists have discovered bizarre prehistoric sea life hundreds of metres below the Great Barrier Reef, in an unprecedented mission to document species under threat from ocean warming. Ancient sharks, giant oil fish, swarms of crustaceans and a primitive shell-dwelling squid species called the Nautilus were among the astonishing life captured by remote controlled cameras at Osprey Reef.Lead researcher Justin Marshall Thursday said his team had also found several unidentified...
  • New Batfish Species Found Under U.S. Gulf Oil Spill

Researchers have discovered two previously unknown species of bottom-dwelling fish in the Gulf of Mexico, living right in the area affected by the BP oil spill.Researchers identified new species of pancake batfishes, a flat fish rarely seen because of the dark depths they favour. They are named for the clumsy way they "walk" along the sea bottom, like a bat crawling. "One of the fishes that we describe is completely restricted to the oil spill area," John Sparks of the American Museum of ...
  • Five-Legged Toad Discovered

A five-legged toad has been discovered by a dog walker on a nature reserve. Faye Sweeney was attempting to move the amphibian from a path into the shade at the Attenborough Nature Reserve in Nottinghamshire when she noticed it had an extra limb. The 27-year-old, a regular visitor to the reserve, made the discovery last week and reported it to charity Froglife. Ms Sweeney, from Chilwell, Nottingham, said: ''I was just out on the path walking down with three dogs so didn't want it to get tr...
  • Newly Discovered Giant Lizard Is Human-Sized, Has Two Penises
    by Wish
    Posted April 12th, 2010 at 12:14 am
Biologists have just made one of the most stunning animal discoveries of the year--it's a cousin of the komodo dragon uncovered on an island in the Philippines. Scientists have dubbed the species of monitor lizard, which measures over six feet in length, the Varanus bitatawa. More on the giant lizard that biologists are calling 'spectacular' after the jump. And yes, we'll get to the whole dual-penis thing. The AFP reports that the lizard is brightly colored, is not a carnivore (unlike its...
  • Frog Thought To Have Been Extinct For 30 Years Discovered In Australia

A species of frog thought to have been extinct for 30 years has been discovered in rural Australian farmland. Frank Sartor, minister for environment and climate change, said the discovery of the yellow-spotted bell frog is a reminder of the need to protect natural habitats so "future generations can enjoy the noise and colour of our native animals." Luke Pearce, a local fisheries conservation officer, stumbled across one of the frogs in October 2008 while researching an endangered fish sp...
  • New Species Of Dinosaur Found In Eastern Utah Rock
    by Ezquara
    Posted March 2nd, 2010 at 12:08 am
Fossils of a previously undiscovered species of dinosaur have been found in slabs of Utah sandstone that were so hard that explosives had to be used to free some of the remains, scientists said Tuesday. The bones found at Dinosaur National Monument belonged to a type of sauropod — long-necked plant-eaters that were said to be the largest animal ever to roam land. The discovery included two complete skulls from other types of sauropods — an extremely rare find, scientists said. The fo...
  • A Six-Legged Deer Discovered
    by Ezquara
    Posted February 11th, 2010 at 12:05 am
A mutant, six-legged deer was discovered in Everett Springs, Georgia in the US after being viciously attacked by two dogs. The little one has two distinct pelvises and uses one leg from each to walk. It also had two tails but lost one following the attack of the dogs. The veterinarian treating it said the deer’s case is truly abnormal: the legs are part of a twin that didn’t form all the way. It seems to move pretty well, considering the two central legs almost always get in the way....
  • DNA Mechanism That Prevents Two Species From Reproducing Discovered
    by Taanuu
    Posted November 1st, 2009 at 12:01 am
When two populations of a species become geographically isolated from each other, their genes diverge from one another over time. Cornell researchers have discovered a genetic mechanism in fruit flies that prevents two closely related species from reproducing, a finding that offers clues to how species evolve. Eventually, when a male from one group mates with a female from the other group, the offspring will die or be born sterile, as crosses between horses and donkeys produce sterile mu...

December 17, 2007Mammal expert Martua Sinaga holds a 3-pound (1.4-kilogram) rat that may be a species new to science. The rat was found in the remote Foja Mountains of western New Guinea, Indonesia, on a June 2007 expedition, experts announced yesterday. Researchers from Conservation International and the Indonesia Institute of Science had previously discovered several new species of plants and animals during a trip to the pristine rain forest region in 2005. When the team returned ...

The India’s smallest land vertebrate, a 10-millimeter frog, has been discovered from the Western Ghats of Kerala by Delhi University Systematics Biologist, S D Biju and his colleagues. This tiny Indian frog sitting on an Indian 5 rupee coin is the smallest India frog. (Credit: Image courtesy of University of Delhi) Indian land vertebrates (all animals with backbone except fishes), comprises of 2,400 species including 218 frog species.
